The post office, general store, and beer joint opened in 1886. Hondo Crouch and partners bought the town in 1970. Jerry Jeff Walker and the Lost Gonzo Band recorded “¡Viva Terlingua!” in the dance hall in 1973, and Waylon Jennings’s 1977 hit carried the name farther. The 1886 date refers to the trading complex, not the settlement’s origins.
