The Tampary family opened Flora-Bama on August 1, 1964, at the Florida–Alabama line. Joe Gilchrist bought it in 1978. The roadhouse became closely associated with the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival, rebuilt after Hurricane Ivan in 2004, and created the Interstate Mullet Toss.
